Keeping your carpets clean is necessary for a safe and hygienic work or home environment. Although getting a professional steam clean every so often is highly advisable, it is also important to do your own carpet cleaning on a regular basis. This will keep your carpets fresh and also extend their life. Here are a few carpet cleaning tips to keep your carpets from getting dirty too quickly.
1. Vacuum at least weekly
Regular vacuuming ensures that dirt doesn’t build up or get too deeply embedded in the carpet. For high-traffic areas like corridors, walk ways, or entrances, try to vacuum at least twice a week.
2. Empty the filter before you vacuum
If the vacuum filter is already full, this can affect the vacuum’s suction. A reduced suction will make your vacuuming efforts ineffective, and not be able to dislodge dirt that is more firmly embedded in the carpet.
3. Place mats outside entrances
A coarse mat outside any entrances to the house will help to dislodge any soil from shoes and feet before people enter the home.
4. Blot stains - don’t rub!
Rubbing out a stain can damage carpet fibres and also spread the stain. Blot the stain, applying direct pressure to a single area at a time. Start from the outside of the stain in, to avoid spreading the stain outwards.
5. Vinegar can help with stains
Many stains can be effectively managed with plain water and a hard bristled brush. If you have a stubborn stain, you can create a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar.
